Everything you need to know about visiting a hamam in Istanbul for the first time. What to expect, what to bring, and how to get the most from your visit.

You are welcomed at the camekan (entrance hall). Store your belongings in a locker, change into a pestemal (cotton wrap) and slippers.

Enter the iliklik (warm room) to let your body adjust to the heat. Spend 10–15 minutes here before moving to the hot room.

Lie on the gobektasi (heated marble platform) at the centre of the domed chamber. Let the steam and warmth open your pores.

Your tellak or natir scrubs your body with a coarse exfoliating mitt, removing dead skin and toxins. It may feel vigorous but it is completely safe.

Using a cloth pouch filled with olive oil soap, the attendant covers you in billowing foam and massages your muscles with firm, rhythmic strokes.

Rinse with alternating warm and cool water. Return to the camekan for complimentary tea, sherbet or water while you relax on day beds.
A Turkish bath, or hamam, is one of the oldest bathing traditions in the world. Rooted in Roman thermae and perfected by the Ottomans, the hamam ritual follows a specific sequence designed to cleanse, exfoliate and relax the body.
The hamam atmosphere is designed to relax you immediately. The sound of water flowing over marble, soft light filtering through star-shaped skylights in the dome, and the gentle warmth of the heated stone all work together to melt away tension.
The kese scrub is the heart of the experience. Your attendant uses a rough mitt to remove dead skin cells, improve circulation and unclog pores. After the scrub, you will see visible rolls of dead skin falling away — this is completely normal and a sign that the treatment is working.
The foam massage that follows is the most distinctive part of the Turkish bath. Your attendant fills a cloth pouch with olive oil soap and creates enormous clouds of fragrant foam, which are worked into your skin with firm, sweeping strokes.
After rinsing, you will be wrapped in fresh towels and guided to the relaxation area. Most hamams serve complimentary Turkish tea or Ottoman sherbet. This cool-down period is an important part of the ritual — take your time and enjoy the afterglow.
